Federal Way Deck Building Experts

The Best Choice In Federal Way Deck Builders

No two Federal Way backyards are alike. A sloped lot off Dash Point Road asks for a completely different structure than a flat Twin Lakes yard or an elevated walkout backing onto a greenbelt.

So we start with how you actually intend to use the space, long before anyone starts talking about board colors. From there we work through the options together, whether that means low-maintenance composite, cedar, tropical hardwood or porcelain paver, and build you something that looks considered, stays easy to live with, and holds up for decades rather than seasons.

We have been building in this climate long enough to know exactly what it does to a deck that was installed cheaply. Water finds the ledger. Fasteners corrode. Undersized footings settle, and two winters later the whole surface has a bounce in it. That experience is what you are really hiring when you bring in an established decking company, and it is why we are comfortable handing you a fixed written price before a single board gets cut.

As deck contractors in Federal Way, we also carry the project through permitting. Where the City of Federal Way requires engineered drawings or a building permit, we prepare the paperwork and deal with the plan reviewer on your behalf.

Wood Deck Building

Cedar, pressure-treated fir and tropical hardwoods such as ipe, installed by wood deck builders who understand how each species behaves in Puget Sound humidity. Deck resurfacing Federal Way WA — newly resurfaced composite deck surface

Deck Resurfacing

When the frame below is still sound but the walking surface has grayed, split or gone soft underfoot, deck resurfacing gives you a new deck for a fraction of a full rebuild. We strip the old boards, inspect and repair every joist, then lay a new surface in composite, cedar or porcelain paver. Most projects finish in two to four days.

Pool deck resurfacing Federal Way WA — multi-level pool deck surround built by Decks Restore

Pool Deck Resurfacing

Pool decks take constant moisture, chlorine and bare feet, which is why we resurface them in slip-resistant porcelain paver or capped composite rather than bare timber. While the surface is open we correct the slope and drainage, so water runs away from the coping and the house instead of pooling at the edge where it does the damage.

Deck repair Federal Way WA — railing and board repair on a residential deck

Deck Repair

Loose railings, springy boards and rot where the deck meets the house are the three calls we take most often from Federal Way homeowners. We trace the fault back to its cause, whether that is failed flashing, corroded fasteners, a compromised joist or an undersized footing, and repair it so the fix actually holds. Most repairs wrap in a day or two.

Deck replacement in Federal Way, WA — rebuilt deck framing, stairs and new surface

Deck Replacement

When posts, beams or footings have reached the end of their service life, replacement is the honest answer and we will say so. We demolish and haul away the old structure, pour new footings to code, and rebuild the frame and surface from scratch. You end up with an engineered deck and a documented permit history instead of another decade of patching.

Low-Maintenance Decking Built For Our Climate

Composite Deck Builders In Federal Way, WA

Composite is the material we install most often in Federal Way, and the weather is the whole reason. Western Washington hands a timber deck the better part of eight damp months a year, which is how boards end up cupped, splintered and gray long before the framing underneath has given up on anything.

Composite does not drink up water the way timber does. It stays flat, holds its color through our wet winters and bright August afternoons, and never asks you for a weekend of sanding and staining. We install the full range, from entry-level boards through capped lines such as Trex Transcend, and we build them the way the manufacturer intends: hidden fasteners so no screw heads interrupt the surface, picture-frame borders at the perimeter, joist spacing matched to the specific product, and proper flashing where the deck meets your house so water runs off instead of in.

Those details are the entire difference between a composite deck that still looks sharp in twenty years and one that looks acceptable for two. They are also the first things a cut-rate bid quietly leaves out.

Cedar, Fir And Tropical Hardwood

Wood Deck Builders In Federal Way, WA

Wood deck builders Federal Way WA — cedar deck with built-in bench seating by Decks Restore

Composite is not the right answer for every house. Plenty of Federal Way homes, particularly older craftsman and mid-century properties, look far better with real timber underfoot, and some homeowners simply prefer the grain and the warmth of it. Our wood deck builders work in western red cedar, pressure-treated Douglas fir and tropical hardwoods such as ipe and cumaru.

The difference between a wood deck that lasts and one that does not comes down to details you will never see once the job is finished. Cut ends get sealed before installation, because that is where rot starts. Fasteners are stainless or properly coated, because standard screws will streak cedar black within a season. Board spacing is set for drainage rather than appearance on day one, and the framing gets flashed and detailed so water never sits against the ledger.

A timber deck in this climate does need maintenance. Expect to clean and re-seal every two to three years. We will tell you honestly what that commitment looks like before you decide, and if a low-maintenance surface would suit your household better, we will say so.

Save Your Deck, Skip The Rebuild

Deck Resurfacing In Federal Way, WA

If you already have a deck in Federal Way, you may be assuming the only option left is to tear it down and start again. Often it is not. Where the framing, posts and footings still check out structurally, deck resurfacing replaces the boards, railings and stairs on top of the existing structure, which typically costs a fraction of a full rebuild.

The process is straightforward. We strip the weathered surface, open up the frame and inspect every joist, beam and footing, then handle the small repairs a deck inevitably collects over fifteen or twenty years. From there we lay a new surface in composite, cedar or porcelain paver and rebuild the railings to current code. What you end up with looks and performs like a new deck, because everything you touch and walk on is new.

Resurfacing is also the natural moment to add the things that were never on the original build. Integrated stair lighting, built-in benches, a wider landing, cable railing in place of timber balusters, or an under-deck drainage system that turns the space below into usable dry storage. The frame is already open, so adding them now costs a fraction of retrofitting later.

Slip-Resistant Surfaces Around Water

Pool Deck Resurfacing In Federal Way, WA

Pool decks fail faster than any other surface we work on, and the reasons are obvious once you see one stripped back. Constant moisture, chlorine or salt carry-off, standing water at the coping, and bare feet demanding grip in exactly the conditions where timber offers the least of it.

We resurface pool decks in porcelain paver or capped composite, both of which are rated for wet traffic and stay far cooler underfoot than poured concrete in direct August sun. While the surface is open we fix the problem that caused the failure in the first place, correcting slope and drainage so water sheds away from the coping and the house rather than collecting along the perimeter.

The result is a pool surround that stays level, keeps its grip when wet, resists chlorine staining and does not need sealing every couple of seasons. If you have been getting pool deck quotes that only address the top layer, ask what the contractor intends to do about the drainage.

Repairs Done Right The First Time

Deck Repair In Federal Way, WA

Three calls account for most of the deck repair work we do in Federal Way. Railings that have gone loose at the post connection. Boards that feel springy or soft in one section. And rot where the deck meets the house, which is almost always a flashing failure at the ledger rather than a problem with the deck itself.

We diagnose before we quote. That means getting underneath the structure, checking the ledger connection, the footings, the joist hangers and the fasteners, and identifying the actual cause instead of covering it with a new board. A repair that treats the symptom buys you a season. A repair that fixes the cause lasts as long as the rest of the deck.

Most repairs finish in a day or two. And if a deck has passed the point where repair makes financial sense, we will tell you that plainly instead of selling you work that only postpones the decision.

Real Projects, Real Results

Before & After Transformations

Three decks we rebuilt for Puget Sound homeowners, shown exactly as we found them and exactly as we left them. No staging, no filters, just the same deck photographed from the same spot.

Before — weathered wood front entry deck with greyed, rotting boards and worn stairs, prior to rebuild by Decks Restore
After — new composite front entry deck with white railings, lattice skirting and a paver walkway, built by Decks Restore
Project 01

Front Entry Deck Rebuild

Composite Decking Full Rebuild Paver Walkway

The original porch had lost the fight with Puget Sound winters: cupped boards, soft stair treads and moss holding moisture against the framing. We took it back to the footings, rebuilt the structure, and finished in warm composite with white railings, lattice skirting and a paver path that moves water away from the house instead of toward it.

Before — faded two-level wood deck with dated spindle railings and weathered stairs, prior to replacement by Decks Restore
After — rebuilt two-level elevated composite deck with dark boards, new railings and matching stairs, built by Decks Restore
Project 02

Two-Level Elevated Deck Replacement

Elevated Deck Structural Rebuild New Railings

Two storeys of sun-bleached timber with railings that had gone loose at the posts. Both levels came out and went back in as engineered composite over new framing, with the stair run rebuilt to match. The dark boards hold their colour through the wet months and the whole structure is now rated for the loads it actually carries.

Before — small weathered wood deck with faded boards, dark spindle railings and a narrow stair run boxed in beside the chimney, prior to full rebuild by Decks Restore
After — larger two-level composite deck on new posts and footings, with black metal railings, a dining level and a separate lounge area, built by Decks Restore
Project 03

Full Rebuild On A Larger Footprint

Full Rebuild Expanded Footprint Multi-Level Build

Nothing here was worth keeping. The old deck was a cramped platform squeezed in beside the chimney, with faded boards and a stair run that ate most of the usable space. We took it out completely and rebuilt from new footings and framing, pushing the footprint well past where the original stopped. It now works as two levels: a dining area against the house and a lower lounge zone joined by a walkway, finished in dark composite with black metal railings throughout.

Wondering which way your own deck will go, repair or replace? We will tell you plainly after we have looked at it.

We just had a deck and roof installed in our backyard and couldn't be happier with the expert craftsmanship. Daniel and his crew were fantastic to work with. The whole project took just 1 week to finish, and was done at a very reasonable cost. Another local company quoted us more than double for the same project with lower quality material. I highly recommend Decks Restore to anyone thinking of installing a new deck.

Working with this company, especially Daniel, is a breath of fresh air. I had another contractor for another deck job and Decks Restore outshines them by a lot! Things that go well: timeliness, great communication, superb quality workmanship and care, hard working and focused even in rainy weather, and a good price. Daniel recommended quality products that make a difference to avoid warping bending, and water pooling. I’m having them install a deck roof now I highly recommend this company without fail.

We got the entire deck replaced including new footings and support beams for less than what another contractor quoted us for just replacing the decking. The workman were meticulous and were very respectful of our property. Sergey and Kiril obviously took pride in what they do and produced a beautiful end product. Thanks for a great job.

We worked with Daniel to replace our deck last July and install Trex composite flooring. He was excellent, very knowledgeable and thorough, decently priced, and a very nice guy overall. We were very happy with his work. Of all the home projects we have done, this is the most satisfied we have been! We did not have to change the frame, but he did add additional pillars to support the weight of the composite deck flooring. Of all the research that we had done and quotes we had gotten from different deck companies, Daniel was the best in every category. I highly recommend him for all of your deck needs! Before and after photos attached below.

We had a deck railing project that we wanted to obtain a Building Permit so we would not have issues in the future. The City of Federal Way required proof of engineering as well as "project drawings". We worked with several contractors who were either unwilling or unable to obtain what was required by the City. We chose Decks Restore because they were willing from the beginning to work with us and the City. We were finally able to obtain the Permit thanks to Daniel's (Danu) efforts! They installed cable railing and rebuilt our deck stairway and we are very happy with the excellent job they did!

Decks Restore gave us a great deck repair with great service! We initially were having a deck built by a different contractor, however before the project was finished the original contractor ghosted us. We contacted Decks Restore who were able to come out and finish the project to a far higher level of quality than the original contractor. They were constantly answering our questions and talking us through the repairs. I only wish I had gone with them in the first place!

Deck Building In Federal Way, Answered

Frequently Asked Questions

How Much Does It Cost To Build A Deck In Federal Way, WA?

Cost comes down to a handful of variables: square footage, how high the deck sits above grade, the decking material you choose, the railing style, stairs, and whether the existing framing can be reused. Composite costs more up front than pressure-treated wood but saves years of staining and sealing. Rather than quote a vague range, we measure your space, review material samples with you, and hand you a fixed written price before any work begins. That estimate is free and carries no obligation.

How Do I Choose A Deck Builder Near Me In Federal Way?

Ask for three things before you sign anything. First, a current Washington contractor license number you can verify through the Department of Labor and Industries. Second, proof of liability insurance and bonding. Third, a fixed written scope rather than a verbal range, with the decking product named by brand and line. Then ask who is actually performing the work, because many companies subcontract the framing out. Our crews are in house from the first measurement to the last sweep.

Do I Need A Permit To Build A Deck In Federal Way?

In most cases, yes. Washington’s residential code generally requires a building permit for decks raised more than 30 inches above grade, and any deck attached to the house typically needs one regardless of height. Requirements can change and the City of Federal Way makes the final determination on your specific project, so we confirm before every build. Where a permit or engineered drawings are required, we prepare the submission and deal with the plan reviewer on your behalf.

How Long Does It Take To Build A Deck?

Most residential decks in Federal Way take about a week on site, from demolition through to the final walkthrough. Resurfacing an existing deck usually runs two to four days. Larger multi-level builds, elevated decks or projects requiring engineered drawings take longer, and permitting can add two to four weeks before construction starts. We give you a schedule in writing with your quote and we hold to it.

What Decking Material Works Best In The Federal Way Climate?

Capped composite performs best for most households here. Western Washington delivers roughly eight damp months a year, and composite does not absorb water, so it resists the cupping, splintering and graying that timber develops in this climate, with no annual staining. Porcelain pavers are the stronger choice around pools, on rooftops and over flat surfaces. Cedar and tropical hardwoods still look excellent and suit certain homes well, provided you are willing to clean and re-seal every two to three years.

Can You Resurface My Deck Instead Of Replacing It?

Often, yes, and it usually costs considerably less. If the posts, beams, joists and footings are still structurally sound, we can strip the old surface, repair what needs repairing underneath, and lay new boards and railings on the existing frame. If we find rot in the ledger, failed footings or compromised joists, we will tell you directly that resurfacing is not the right call rather than lay a new surface over a failing structure.

Do You Offer Pool Deck Resurfacing?

Yes. We resurface pool decks and spa surrounds in slip-resistant porcelain paver and capped composite, both rated for constant wet traffic and far cooler underfoot than poured concrete in summer. We also correct slope and drainage while the surface is open, since standing water at the coping is what causes most pool deck failures in the first place.

Are You Licensed And Insured In Washington?

Yes. Decks Restore LLC is licensed, bonded and insured in Washington State under WA LIC #: CC DECKSRL797P2. You can verify that number directly through the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries contractor lookup, and we encourage you to verify any contractor you are considering.
